About Nova Peris
Nova Peris, born on February 25, 1971 in Darwin, Australia, is a groundbreaking Aboriginal Australian athlete and politician. She made history as the first indigenous Australian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal and the first indigenous woman to be elected to a federal parliamentary seat.
Before her political career, Peris started as a member of the Australian women’s field hockey team and won gold at the 1996 Olympics. She later transitioned to track and competed as a runner at the 2000 Olympics.
In 2013, she was elected senator of the Northern Territory with the endorsement of the Australian Labor Party. Peris has three children; one with ex-husband Sean Kneebone and two with ex-husband Daniel Batman. In 2012, she married Scott Appleton.
