About Nikki Giovanni
Nikki Giovanni is an African-American poet, author, and professor known for her notable works such as Bicycles: Love Poems, Cotton Candy on a Rainy Day, and Black Judgement. Additionally, she has written several children’s books including Spin a Soft Black Song and The Sun is So Quiet.
Before gaining fame as a writer, Nikki attended Fisk University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University.
In 2007 during the April 16 campus massacre at Virginia Tech where she was teaching creative writing, her words “We are Virginia Tech…We will prevail,” became a rallying cry for traumatized students.
Born in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1943 and raised in Ohio, she currently resides with her son Thomas.
