About Niki de Saint Phalle
Niki de Saint Phalle, born on October 29, 1930 in Nanterre, France, was a renowned French sculptor known for her large-scale and eccentric works. Some of her notable sculptures include “The Golem” and “L’Ange Protecteur.” She is also famous for creating The Tarot Garden, which took 20 years to complete.
Prior to gaining recognition as an artist, she worked as a fashion model as a teenager and appeared on the covers of Life magazine in 1949 and French Vogue in 1952. She briefly attended New York City’s Brearley School.
Saint Phalle is also recognized for creating a series of plaster and plastic sculptures depicting women as brides and mothers. Additionally, she married author Harry Matthews with whom she had a daughter named Laura in 1951.
