About Nellie Tayloe Ross
Nellie Tayloe Ross was born on November 29, 1876 in Saint Joseph, Missouri. She was a politician and served as the 14th Governor of Wyoming from 1925 to 1927, making her the first female governor in United States history. She was known for her strong advocacy of prohibition.
Ross entered politics following her husband William’s popularity which helped secure her election after he passed away during his term as Wyoming’s governor due to complications from an appendectomy.
After serving as governor, she went on to become the Director of the U.S. Mint, marking one of the earliest instances of a woman holding a high federal office.
In 1902, Nellie married William B. Ross and had a brother named Samuel who served as a judge in San Antonio, Texas.
