About Nellie Bly
Nellie Bly, born on May 5, 1864 in Burrell, Pennsylvania, was an American journalist known for her groundbreaking achievements. She is best remembered for her record-breaking trip around the world, inspired by Jules Verne’s book “Around The World in 80 Days.”
Prior to fame, she went by the name Elizabeth Cochran and had limited funds that allowed her to attend only one term of boarding school.
Bly made history with her daring investigative reporting when she feigned insanity to gain entry into mental institutions. By doing so, she exposed harrowing conditions and maltreatment within these facilities. Her experiences were chronicled in a bestselling report titled “Ten Days in a Mad-House.”
She tied the knot with Robert Seaman in 1895.
Bly’s life has also been immortalized through literature; Marshall Goldberg’s 2014 novel “The New Colossus” features Bly as its protagonist.
