About Neerja Bhanot
Neerja Bhanot, born on September 7, 1963 in Chandigarh, India, was a renowned purser and chief flight attendant known for her bravery. Tragically killed while trying to save the lives of hundreds of passengers during the hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 in September 1986, after her death she was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra for her heroic act.
Prior to her aviation career, Bhanot had pursued modeling after being spotted by an agent while studying at St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai. In 1985, she joined Pan Am as a flight attendant.
Her legacy is commemorated through various means including “The Neerja I Knew,” a coffee table book published by her brother Aneesha as a tribute.
Born to Rama and Harish Bhanot with two brothers Akhil and Aneesh, Neerja also briefly entered into an arranged marriage in 1985 that dissolved within two months.
