About Natasha Trethewey
Natasha Trethewey, born on April 26, 1966 in Mississippi, is an American poet. She was appointed the United States Poet Laureate in 2012 and received the Pulitzer Prize for her 2006 poetry collection titled Native Guard. Her other notable works include Bellocq’s Ophelia and Thrall.
Trethewey earned her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Georgia before obtaining a master’s degree in English and Creative Writing from Hollins University in Virginia. Notably, she later served as director of the Emory University Creative Writing Program.
Her father, Eric Trethewey, also had a career as a poet. Tragically, her mother Gwendolyn Ann Turnbough was murdered in 1985.
