Natasha McKenna was an African-American woman who died in police custody in Fairfax County, Virginia. Born on January 9, 1978, in the United States, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression at the age of 12.
McKenna was an honors student at Fairfax County High School before her life took a tragic turn which led to her being tasered four times while in custody which ultimately resulted in her death. Her treatment and the causes of her death sparked protests from the NAACP and activists.
At the time of her death, McKenna had a seven-year-old daughter and was facing an outstanding warrant for an alleged attack on a police officer. The release of video footage depicting her tasering further fueled public outcry over this incident.
