Natalie Schafer was a TV actress best known for her role as Lovey Howell, the elegant wife of a millionaire, on the popular show Gilligan’s Island. She was born on November 5, 1900, in Red Bank, New Jersey.
Before finding fame with Gilligan’s Island, she had a successful career playing elegant feminine roles in various productions. Notably, she agreed to do the pilot for Gilligan’s Island in 1964 just for the opportunity to go to Hawaii.
Schafer also appeared in supporting roles in Broadway productions such as “Lady in the Dark” and “The Doughgirls,” although many of these productions were short-lived.
She was married to actor Louis Calhern who often portrayed characters from old-money upper-class backgrounds.
