About Narges Mohammadi
Narges Mohammadi, born on April 21, 1972 in Zanjan, Iran, is a well-known human rights activist. She currently serves as the vice president of the Defenders of Human Rights Center. Mohammadi has gained recognition for her advocacy work against the death penalty and was honored with the prestigious Alexander Langer Award in 2009 and the Andrei Sakharov Prize in 2018.
Prior to her activism, Mohammadi earned a degree in physics from Imam Khomeini International University and worked as an engineer before joining the Defenders of Human Rights Center in 2003.
In 2016, she was imprisoned under controversial circumstances in Iran and later began a hunger strike while incarcerated to protest not receiving medical care in January 2019. Her husband is long-time Iranian political journalist Taghi Rahmani, with whom she shares twins named Ali and Kiana.
