Naomi Sims was a trailblazing figure in the fashion industry, born on March 30, 1948, in Oxford, Mississippi. She gained prominence as the first black supermodel and made history by breaking the color barrier with her appearance on the cover of Ladies’ Home Journal in 1968.Prior to achieving fame, Sims encountered resistance from modeling agencies due to her race.

Undeterred, she approached fashion photographers directly and ultimately found success through this unconventional route.Throughout her career, Sims worked with renowned designers including Halston, Fernando Sanchez, Teal Traina, and Giorgio di Sant’Angelo.

Sims experienced familial challenges early in life when her parents divorced during her youth. Shortly after their separation, her mother fell seriously ill and Sims was placed in a foster home.
