About Nancy Grace Roman
Nancy Grace Roman was born on May 16, 1925, in Tennessee. She was an American astronomer and the first Executive of NASA. Her notable discovery was that stars made of helium and hydrogen moved faster than other stars. In 1962, she received the Federal Woman’s Award for her contributions to the field.
Before gaining fame for her work at NASA, Roman started an astronomy club when she was just eleven years old. She dedicated over two decades to NASA before moving on to assist the Goddard Space Flight Center until 1997.
Roman’s parents were geophysicist Irwin Roman and music teacher Georgia Smith Roman.
