About Nan Goldin

Nan Goldin, born on September 12, 1953 in Washington, DC, is a controversial American photographer known for her influential works such as “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency” (1981), “Misty and Jimmy Paulette in a Taxi, NYC” (1991), and “The Hug, NYC” (1980).

Goldin received her first camera at the age of fifteen and had her first solo photographic exhibition just five years later. Her series “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency” depicted heroin use, domestic violence, and other extreme situations. Tragically, many of her photographic subjects either overdosed or died from AIDS-related illnesses.

Goldin was raised in the suburbs of Boston after being born in Washington D.C., where she also experienced the loss of her sister to suicide.
