Najma Akhtar is a world music singer born on September 18, 1964, in Chelmsford, England. She gained recognition as the winner of the Birmingham Asian Song Contest in 1984 and is known for her unique blend of jazz, Indian ghazal and bhajans in her music.
Before pursuing a career in music, Akhtar attended Aston University in Birmingham to study chemical engineering. However, her passion for music led her to produce her first album in 1987.
Over the course of her career, Najma Akhtar has released eight albums between 1988 and 2009. She has collaborated with notable musicians such as saxophonists Stan Harrison and Michael J. Parlett.
Akhtar’s cultural background is of Asian descent despite being born in England.
