About Myrlie Evers-Williams
Myrlie Evers-Williams, born on March 17, 1933 in Mississippi, is an African-American civil rights activist and former Chairwoman of the NAACP. She dedicated three decades to seeking justice for the murder of her first husband, a prominent civil rights leader. Prior to her fame, she began working for the NAACP alongside her husband in 1954 and fought for voting rights and desegregation in Mississippi.
Evers-Williams made history by delivering the invocation at President Barack Obama’s second inauguration as the first woman and layperson to do so. She was married to Medgar Evers from 1951 until his assassination in 1963. In 1975, she wed Walter Williams, remaining married until his passing in 1995.
