About MJ Rodriguez
MJ Rodriguez, born on January 7, 1991 in Newark, New Jersey, is a TV actress and singer. She gained recognition for her role as Blanca Rodriguez-Evangelista in the series Pose, where she was part of the largest cast of transgender actors to star as regulars on a scripted show. In addition to her work on television, she also played Angel in the 2011 Off-Broadway revival of Rent and received the 2011 Clive Barnes Award.
Prior to her rise to fame, MJ Rodriguez attended Queen of Angels Catholic School and began pursuing acting at age 11 while enrolled at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
Outside her career in entertainment, she has been involved in ballroom scene and was trained in voguing. MJ Rodriguez is an alumna of Newark Arts High School and Berklee College of Music. Notably, in 2021 she made history by becoming the first transgender woman nominated for an Emmy award.
She hails from multicultural descent with African-American mother and Puerto Rican father. Her stage name “MJ” derived from Marvel Comics character Mary Jane “MJ” Watson from Spider-Man.
