About Misty Copeland
Misty Copeland is a renowned ballet dancer, born on September 10, 1982 in Kansas City, Missouri. She made history by becoming the first African-American soloist at the American Ballet Theatre and later became the company’s principal dancer, marking another milestone as the first African-American woman to do so.
Before her rise to fame, Copeland honed her skills at the San Francisco Ballet School following a childhood focused on gymnastics and dance. Her talent was recognized when she received the LA Music Center Spotlight Award in 1998 for being South California’s best dancer.
Copeland comes from a large family with three older siblings – Erica, Douglas, and Christopher – as well as a younger half sister named Lindsey and a younger half brother named Cameron. Her parents are Sylvia DelaCerna and Doug Copeland. In 2016, she married her long-time boyfriend Olu Evans.
