About Mildred Wirt Benson
Mildred Wirt Benson (July 10, 1905) was an American children’s author known for her work on the early Nancy Drew books. She wrote under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene and penned twenty-three Nancy Drew mysteries during the late 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s.
Benson studied English and journalism at the University of Iowa before embarking on a six-decade-long career as a columnist for the Toledo Blade.
Under her real name, she also wrote the popular Penny Parker series, which consisted of eighteen books published between 1939 and 1948.
Benson’s first husband, Asa Wirt, was employed by the Associated Press while her second husband George A. Benson had a journalistic career with a Toledo, Ohio newspaper.
