About Merrill Garbus
Merrill Garbus, born on March 4, 1979 in New York, is a pop singer known for her musical project Tune-Yards. Her performances feature on-the-spot drum loops, layered vocals and ukulele. She gained attention with the release of her debut album Bird Brains on recycled cassette tapes and is noted for her experimentation and rich artistic themes in her music.
Prior to launching her music career, Garbus worked as a puppeteer at Sandglass Theater and played ukulele for Sister Suvi in Montreal. She has also made guest appearances on songs by artists such as Citay, Afuche, and The Blind Boys of Alabama.
Garbus was raised in both New York and New Canaan, Connecticut before moving to Oakland, California after working in Montreal.
