About Melissa Susan Bank
Melissa Susan Bank was an American author born on October 11, 1960, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was known for her work as a novelist and gained recognition for writing books of short stories such as The Girls’ Guide to Hunting and Fishing.
Bank graduated from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in 1982 before moving to New York where she began a career in publishing. She later obtained her Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from Cornell University in 1987.
She taught at Stony Brook University and received the Nelson Algren Award for short fiction in 1993. It took her twelve years to finish writing her first novel due to a head injury sustained when she was struck by a car while riding her bicycle in 1994, which caused short-term memory loss for two years.
Bank passed away in August of 2022. She grew up with her father who was a neurologist and mother who worked as a teacher; eventually losing her father to leukemia after he concealed his condition for almost ten years.
