Melissa O’Neil, born on July 12, 1988 in Calgary, Canada, is a Canadian singer and actress known for her accomplishments as the winner of season three of Canadian Idol. Additionally, she gained recognition for her roles as Portia Lin in the science fiction TV series Dark Matter and as Lucy Chen in ABC’s The Rookie. O’Neil has appeared in over 60 episodes of The Rookie.
Prior to her television success, O’Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol in 2005 and subsequently released her self-titled debut album later that year. Notably, she was the first woman to win Canadian Idol and has been credited on the soundtrack of an episode of The Rookie.
O’Neil’s parents are Tim O’Neil and Alison Yeung while her Chinese name is Oh Seemun, given by her maternal grandfather.
