About Meera Shankar
Meera Shankar, born on October 9, 1950 in India, is a prominent Indian politician and diplomat. From 2009 to 2011, she served as the Ambassador of India to the United States, becoming only the second woman to hold this prestigious position after Vijaya Lakshmi Nehru Pandit.
Prior to her ambassadorship in the US, Meera Shankar held various high-ranking positions within India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Prime Minister’s Office. She was also previously appointed as her country’s Ambassador to Germany.
Shankar received her education at St.Mary’s Convent before pursuing a career with the Indian Foreign Service. She has been married to Ajay Shankar, former Secretary of the Indian Department of Industrial Policy, and together they raised a daughter named Priya.
