About Maya Gabeira
Maya Gabeira, born on April 10, 1987 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a prominent big wave surfer. She gained recognition in 2009 for setting a female record by riding a colossal 46-foot wave in South Africa.
Prior to her achievements as a professional surfer, Gabeira honed her skills on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. In addition to her surfing accomplishments, she won an ESPY award in 2009 for best female action sports athlete.
Gabeira comes from an influential family; her father is Fernando Gabeira, one of the co-founders of Brazil’s Green Party.
