Maud Hart Lovelace, born on April 25, 1892 in Mankato, Minnesota, was a prominent American children’s author of the twentieth century. She is renowned for her Betsy-Tacy book series, which is distinct for its progression of reading difficulty as the characters age throughout the series.
Lovelace developed a passion for writing at an early age and was an avid reader. While briefly attending the University of Minnesota, she had her first story published by the Los Angeles Times Magazine.
The inspiration for Lovelace’s Betsy-Tacy series stemmed from stories she told to her daughter Merian. Born in Mankato, Minnesota to Thomas and Stella Hart alongside her two siblings, Lovelace tied the knot with Delos Lovelace in 1917.
