About Maryam Monsef
Maryam Monsef, born on November 7, 1985 in Peterborough, Canada, is an Afghan-Canadian politician. She currently serves as the Minister of Status of Women in the 29th Canadian Ministry. Previously she held positions as the Minister of Democratic Institutions and President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada until January 10, 2017.
Monsef immigrated to Canada from Iran as a child and later graduated from Trent University with a B.S. in Biology and Psychology. Her political career began when she won the mayorship of her hometown of Peterborough in 2014.
Notably, Maryam Monsef has faced personal tragedy; her father was killed on the Iran-Afghanistan border in 1988 and her uncle disappeared from the University of Kabul while he was a student.
