About Mary Wollstonecraft
Mary Wollstonecraft, born on April 27, 1759 in England, was a renowned novelist and early feminist philosopher. She is best known for her influential 1792 treatise A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. Additionally, she gained recognition for her posthumously-published work Maria: or, The Wrongs of Woman and a travel-themed publication titled Letters Written in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.
Wollstonecraft published her debut work, Mary: A Fiction, in 1788. Notably, she had a brief romantic affair with Swiss artist and writer Henry Fuseli.
In early 1797, following a tumultuous relationship with American writer Gilbert Imlay that resulted in an illegitimate daughter, Mary Wollstonecraft married fellow writer and political philosopher William Godwin. Tragically, she passed away shortly after giving birth to her second child – future Frankenstein author Mary Shelley (born Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin).
