About Mary Todd Lincoln
Mary Todd Lincoln was born on December 13, 1818 in Lexington, Kentucky. She served as the First Lady of the United States from 1861 to 1865 during her marriage to President Abraham Lincoln. Mary Todd Lincoln was portrayed by Sally Fields in the Academy Award-nominated film Lincoln directed by Steven Spielberg.
Prior to fame, she grew up in a slaveholder’s family and had a passion for literature, becoming fluent in French. Despite several of her half-brothers serving in the Confederate Army and being killed in action, she steadfastly supported her husband’s wartime policies.
Mary Todd Lincoln had four sons who were all born in Springfield, Illinois. However, she endured great sorrow when she outlived all but one of them and experienced significant grief and depression as a result.
