About Mary Surratt
Mary Surratt was an American boarding house owner who became infamous for her involvement in the conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. She was born on January 1, 1817, in Maryland and was the first woman to be executed by the United States federal government in 1865.
Surratt’s boarding house became a meeting place for John Wilkes Booth and his co-conspirators, George Atzerodt and Lewis Powell, as they planned the assassination of President Lincoln. Despite maintaining her innocence, she was convicted of taking part in the conspiracy and subsequently executed.
Before gaining notoriety for her connection to the assassination plot, Surratt had converted to Catholicism at a young age. Additionally, she and her husband were sympathetic to the Confederate States of America and hosted Confederate sympathizers at their tavern.
In terms of family life, Surratt married John Harrison Surratt in 1840 and had children named Isaac, Elizabeth Susanna, and John Jr.
