About Mary Shelley
Mary Shelley, born on August 30, 1797 in London, England, was a British novelist best known for her iconic Gothic novel Frankenstein. Some of her other notable works include Valperga, Perkin Warbeck, and The Last Man.
Prior to gaining recognition as a writer, she received tutoring from a governess and spent some time at a boarding school during her early years. At the age of seventeen, she met Percy Shelley who would become both her husband and literary inspiration despite being already married at twenty-two.
Although Mary Shelley penned various essays and novels throughout her lifetime, it wasn’t until the 1970s that there was renewed interest in her other work beyond Frankenstein. Her parents were also writers; William Godwin was a philosopher while Mary Wollstonecraft was an influential feminist who tragically passed away just ten days after giving birth to Mary.
After bearing an illegitimate child with him, Mary married Percy Bysshe Shelley.
