About Mary Seacole
Mary Seacole was a Jamaican-born memoirist known for her 1857 work, Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands. She gained recognition for her efforts as a nurse during the Crimean War and her advocacy for racial tolerance by openly celebrating her multi-ethnic heritage.
Before gaining fame, she traveled to England in the early 1820s and worked to combat racial prejudice. During the Crimean War, she established a medical facility known as the British Hotel in Crimea. Her diverse background included being born to a Scottish military man and Jamaican medicine woman.
Mary Seacole’s legacy was temporarily forgotten after her death but has since gained recognition for her remarkable accomplishments. In 2021, she was portrayed in the hit TV series Doctor Who.
