About Mary Quinn Sullivan

Mary Quinn Sullivan was a pioneering modern art collector born on November 24, 1877 in Indiana. She became one of the founding trustees of the Museum of Modern Art and had a significant impact on shaping its collection.

Prior to her involvement with modern art, Sullivan worked as an art teacher in the Queens, New York public school system starting in 1901. During the 1920s, she formed friendships with Lillie Plummer Bliss and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, both prominent art patrons at the time.

Sullivan’s father was Thomas F. Quinn and her mother was Anne E. Gleason Quinn. In 1917, she married Cornelius J. Sullivan.
