About Mary Landrieu
Mary Landrieu is a Democratic Senator from Louisiana, born on November 23, 1955 in Arlington, Virginia. She gained national attention after Hurricane Katrina when she criticized the federal response to the natural disaster. Prior to her political career, she earned a baccalaureate degree from Louisiana State University and worked as a real estate agent before being elected as a state representative.
In 2005, Landrieu sponsored a Senate resolution apologizing for the U.S. Senate’s failure to enact anti-lynching legislation during the early 20th century. Her family has played prominent roles in politics – her father Moon Landrieu was the former mayor of New Orleans and served as Secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, while her brother Mitch is also involved in public service.
