About Mary Hallock Foote
Mary Hallock Foote was a turn-of-the-century author and illustrator, best known for her short stories set in mining towns in the American West. She was born on November 9, 1847, in New York City. Before gaining fame as an author, she studied art at the New Cooper Institute School of Design for Women in New York City.
In 1876, Foote married Arthur De Wint Foote with whom she later had three children. In addition to her career as an artist and writer, she developed a reputation as a sophisticated hostess to dignitaries and celebrities during her lifetime.
