About Mary Ellen Mark
Mary Ellen Mark, born on March 20, 1940 in Pennsylvania, was a renowned photographer known for her acclaimed works of photojournalism. She received multiple National Endowment for the Arts and Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards and documented historical events such as Vietnam War protests and key moments in the Feminist movement.
Before gaining fame, she studied art history and photojournalism at the University of Pennsylvania where she earned degrees in 1962 and 1964. She later studied and worked in Turkey on a Fulbright Scholarship.
Besides her photography work, Mary Ellen Mark was also a filmmaker who wrote the screenplay for the 1992 Jeff Bridges feature American Heart. She was married to film director Martin Bell.
