About Mary Edwards Walker
Mary Edwards Walker was born on November 26, 1832, in New York. She was a pioneering figure as a doctor and an iconic feminist, abolitionist, prohibitionist, and surgeon. Following the Civil War, she made history by becoming the first woman ever to receive the Medal of Honor.
Prior to her fame, she faced significant challenges as the only woman in her class at Geneva Medical College but ultimately graduated in 1855. During the Civil War, she served as a surgeon for the Union Army and was captured by the Confederate Army before being held as a prisoner of war in Richmond, Virginia.
Walker came from a family with four older sisters and one younger brother.
