About Mary Anna Custis Lee
”’Mary Anna Custis Lee”’ (1808-10-01) was a politician born in Arlington, Virginia. She was the third cousin and wife of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and also had family ties to George Washington, the first president of the United States.
Prior to gaining fame, after her marriage ended she became an advocate for eventual emancipation and taught her slaves how to read and write.
Despite being married to a Confederate general, she advocated for the eventual emancipation of slaves and educated her female slaves—a rare practice in the South at that time.
In June 1831, Mary Anna Custis Lee married Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
