About Mary Ann Shadd
Mary Ann Shadd was born on October 9, 1823 in Delaware. She is noted for being Canada’s first female newspaper publisher and the first woman of African descent to publish a newspaper in North America. Shadd edited the abolitionist journal called the Provincial Freeman during the 1850s.
Prior to her rise as a prominent journalist, she advocated for free African-Americans to immigrate to Canada, and published an influential pamphlet in 1852. During the Civil War, she played a key role in recruiting African-American soldiers to join the Union Army. After the war, she studied law at Howard University and at age sixty became only second American-born woman of African descent with a J.D degree.
Shadd came from a large family; she was one of thirteen children born to Harriet Parnell and Abraham Doras Shadd. Upon settling in Canada, she married Thomas F. Cary and had two children named Sarah and Linton.
