About Martha Cooper
Martha Cooper, born on October 21, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland, is a photographer and photojournalist renowned for introducing the world to the subculture of graffiti. Her captivating documentation of the graffiti scene in New York City has been featured in esteemed publications such as The New York Post, National Geographic, and Smithsonian.
Prior to her prolific career as a photographer, Cooper obtained an art degree from Grinnell College. It was during a visit to Japan that her interest in photography flourished while capturing images of tattoos.
A notable milestone in her career is the publication of Subway Art (1984), a collection of graffiti photography often regarded as “the Bible of street art.” Martha Cooper’s impact on street art culture extends beyond her photography; she also holds significance for being married to an anthropologist.
