Martha Argerich, born on June 5, 1941 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is a renowned pianist. Known for her exceptional talent and reluctance towards media attention, she was hailed as one of the greatest pianists of her era. Argerich’s musical education began at an early age under the tutelage of Vincenzo Scaramuzza, who instilled in her the significance of emotion and lyricism in music. In the 1980s, she shifted away from solo performance to focus on chamber music and concertos while also serving as an accompanist on sonatas. Throughout her life, Argerich has been married three times – first to composer-conductor Robert Chen, then to conductor Charles Dutoit, and lastly to pianist Stephen Kovacevich. She has three daughters—one with each husband.
