About Marlene Dumas
Marlene Dumas is a South African-born painter known for her ink drawings and oil paintings. She was born on August 3, 1953, in South Africa and later settled in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Dumas is known for creating psychologically and sociologically-themed works such as The Blindfolded Man, Dead Marilyn, The Pilgrim, and Pregnant Image. In the 1970s, she attended the School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town before gaining international recognition for her art.
In 2002, Dumas’s exhibition “Marlene Dumas: Name No Names” opened at New York City’s New Museum of Contemporary Art.
She grew up speaking Afrikaans as a native of Cape Town but eventually found herself residing in Europe where she continues to create impactful artwork.
