About Marilyn Nelson
Marilyn Nelson, born on April 26, 1946 in Ohio, is an American poet, children’s author, and translator known for works such as The Homeplace, Mama’s Promises, and A Wreath for Emmett Till. She served as Connecticut Poet Laureate in the early 2000s.
Prior to her fame, Marilyn studied at the University of California-Davis, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Minnesota. She also founded a Connecticut writers’ colony called Soul Mountain Retreat.
Daughter of a teacher and a United States Air Force serviceman, Marilyn grew up on various military bases.
