About Marike de Klerk
Marike de Klerk (November 17, 1937 – December 2, 2001) was the First Lady of South Africa during her husband’s presidency from 1989 to 1994. She also led the National Party’s women’s wing and published two books. Marike met Frederik Willem de Klerk in college, where she was studying commerce. The couple divorced in 1998 after thirty-nine years of marriage. Tragically, she was murdered by her own security guard in her Cape Town apartment.
