About Marielle Franco
Marielle Franco (July 27, 1979 – March 14, 2018) was a Brazilian politician who served as a city councilor of the Municipal Chamber of Rio de Janeiro for the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL) from 2017 to 2018. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Franco held a master’s degree in public administration from Fluminense Federal University. Prior to her political career, she worked as a consultant for state representative Marcelo Freixo.
With over 160,000 followers on her Instagram account under the handle marielle_franco, Marielle was known for her activism and outspoken advocacy for human rights. She gave birth to her first and only child, Luyara Santos when she was just 20 years old.
Tragically, Marielle Franco was assassinated in March 2018.
