Mariel Zagunis is an American sabre fencer born on March 3, 1985, in Oregon. She gained fame as a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the individual sabre event, winning in 2004 and successfully defending her title in 2008.

Before her Olympic success, Zagunis achieved prominence by securing three consecutive Junior World Cup Championships from 2002 to 2004.

In addition to her athletic accomplishments, she had the honor of being chosen as the United States’ flagbearer for the opening ceremony at the 2012 Olympics.

Zagunis comes from a family with a strong sporting background – her parents were both rowers during their college years.
