About Marie Laveau
Marie Laveau was a renowned religious leader and Voodoo practitioner who lived in 19th-century New Orleans, Louisiana. Born on September 10, 1801, in the French Quarter of New Orleans, she was the child of biracial Roman Catholic parents.
Laveau’s life was shrouded in mystery and has inspired numerous works of art and literature. She has been featured in assemblage pieces by visual artist Renee Stout and appeared as a character in several Marvel Comics publications.
In 1819, Laveau married Jacques Paris, a Haitian immigrant. Later on, she had as many as fifteen children with Christophe Dominick Duminy de Glapion.
She is also the subject of author Jewel Parker Rhodes’ novel “Voodoo Dreams: A Novel of Marie Laveau.”
