Mariama Ba Feet

Mariama Ba was a Senegalese feminist author born on April 17, 1929, in Dakar, Senegal. She is best known for her novels that shine a light on the challenges faced by African women. Some of her notable works include So Long a Letter and Scarlet Song.

Prior to venturing into writing, Ba underwent training as a teacher. Her debut novel was published in 1981 and garnered significant acclaim. Notably, her first work of fiction, So Long a Letter, received the prestigious Noma Prize in 1980.

Ba’s personal life also drew attention; she married a member of Senegal’s Parliament and together they had nine children before eventually parting ways in divorce.
