About Maria Teresa Mirabal
Maria Teresa Mirabal was born on October 15th, 1935 in the Dominican Republic. She, along with her sisters, formed an anti-Trujillo organization called the Movement of the Fourteenth of June and adopted the underground code name Las Mariposas (The Butterflies). The sisters were assassinated in November of 1960 for opposing dictator Rafael Trujillo’s regime. Maria Teresa’s surviving sister Dede later opened a museum in their honor. Leading up to their murder, Maria Teresa and another sister Minerva were imprisoned and tortured several times because of their activism. Additionally, Maria Teresa’s husband was also imprisoned for his political activities.
