About Maria Telkes
Maria Telkes, born on December 12th, 1900 in Hungary, was a prominent physicist known for her groundbreaking work in the field of Solar energy. She is credited with inventing the first thermoelectric generator, pioneering the debut of the Solar heat system, and designing a refrigerator powered by thermoelectricity. Colleagues often referred to her as “The Sun Queen.”
After obtaining her doctorate in physical chemistry from Hungary, Telkes moved to the United States and conducted research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Throughout her career, she received several accolades including the Society of Women Engineers Award in 1952 and the American Solar Energy Society’s Charles Greeley Abbot Award in 1977. In recognition of her contributions to science and innovation, she was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2012.
Telkes spent much of her early adulthood years living and working in Boston before later settling in Texas after immigrating from Hungary.
