About Maria Louise Rame
Maria Louise Rame, born in England on January 1, 1839 was an esteemed English author known for her work under the pen name “Ouida.” She is noted for her novels which include Under Two Flags, Afternoon, and A Dog of Flanders as well as for her children’s books, short stories and essays. Prior to achieving success in writing she had a deep affection for animals; at one point owning thirty dogs. Her debut novel Held In Bondage was published when she was twenty-four years old.
She chose the pen name Ouida based on her childhood pronunciation of her actual name. Family wise, she had a brother who served in the U.S. Civil War. Born in Bury St Edmunds, England; she passed away at the age of sixty-nine in Viareggio, Italy.
