About Maria Gaetana Agnesi
Maria Gaetana Agnesi was an Italian mathematician born on May 16, 1718. She is best known for writing the first book that dealt with both differential and integral calculus, titled Instituzioni Analitiche. In addition to her achievements in mathematics, she also dedicated the latter half of her life to philanthropy and theology.
Before gaining fame as a mathematician, Agnesi displayed an early aptitude for languages; by the age of eleven, she was already fluent in seven different languages including French, Hebrew and Latin.
In a noteworthy milestone for women in academia, Agnesi became just the second woman in history to be appointed as a university professor. Additionally, her sister Maria Teresa Agnesi Pinottini was a well-known composer.
